New daily Emergency Meditation focus: Cyclone Fani

India and Bangladesh are bracing for a significant tropical cyclone later this week, a storm which could be the strongest to strike the country's coastline in almost five years. At the time of writing this post, Tropical Cyclone Fani is located in the Bay of Bengal roughly 270 kilometers (170 miles)  off of the coast of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It has intensified significantly over the past couple of days and could strengthen further over the next 24-48 hours as it nears the coast.

Fani is currently an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm with winds equal to a Category 3 hurricane in the Atlantic or East Pacific oceans, with wind speeds up to 195 km/h.

The Navy, units of the Air Force and The National Disaster Response Force are on standby. This is the first tropical cyclone of the year in the northern Indian Ocean. There is a possibility that more than 100 million people will be affected by Cyclone Fani.

Coastal states of Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are on high alert. Cyclone Fani is expected to hit the Odisha coast by Friday, May 3rd. The speed of Cyclone Fani at the time of rainfall will be 175-185 km/h.

The cyclone will move along the coast of Odisha and go to West Bengal and northern parts of Andhra Pradesh. A storm surge of about 1.5 metres height above the astronomical tide is likely to inundate low-lying areas of Ganjam, Khurda, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts in Odisha at the time of landfall.

According to the forecast, Cyclone Fani is expected to strengthen further on Thursday to a Category 4 hurricane, with winds speed in excess of 213 km/h. There is a chance that Fani could briefly become a Super Cyclonic Storm, equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane, during this time.

Therefore, we suggest including the newly forming Cyclone Fani in the daily Emergency Meditation at 2 PM UTC until it dissolves. Visualize this cyclone losing its strength and causing as little harm as possible.
