New Daily Emergency Meditation Focus: Indonesian Tsunami

A tsunami hit beaches around Sunda Strait in Indonesia at about 9.30 PM on Saturday night, Indonesian time, which is around 2.30 PM UTC. A total of 222 people have been confirmed dead and 843 injured, while 28 remain missing after the tsunami destroyed hundreds of houses and buildings, media reported, citing the national disaster relief agency. Authorities expect the death toll to rise as many affected areas have not yet been reached.

There was no warning given prior to the tsunami. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the wave was not caused by an earthquake, but was possibly the result of an eruption of Mount Krakatoa. The agency later explained that its early warning systems are mostly tied to tectonic activity, rather than volcanic. Hence the system did not give warning  to this tsunami.

The tsunami appears to have been triggered by a combination of underwater landslides caused by the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in the Sunda Strait that lies between the islands of Java and Sumatra.

"It is well known that volcanoes have the capacity to generate large waves. The mechanism as ever is the displacement of a large volume of water. Except, unlike in a classic earthquake-driven tsunami in which the seafloor will thrust up or down, it seems an eruption event set in motion some kind of slide," said Jonathan Amos, a BBC science correspondent.

The tsunami came less than three months after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Palu on the island of Sulawesi killing 2,256 people.

Krakatoa is the volcano responsible for one of the deadliest eruptions in recorded history: in 1883 it caused over 36,000 deaths both directly and with the tsunami waves it triggered.

Aid agencies are now helping to evacuate the injured and bring in clean water, tarpaulins and provide shelter. The Red Cross said they were preparing for the possibility of diseases breaking out in the tsunami zone.
